You may be aware of the growing neo-atheism movement with the voices being Professor Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Dan Dennett, Bill Maher, Christopher Hitchens, etc. I have been listening and watching and have even commented about some of my feelings towards this movement (and I will say, comparing the general kindness of the atheists who commented versus the general strident tone of the evangelical/Christian responses to whether we are Christians or not is interesting).
But, one of the strains in this neo-atheism advancing the maxim that religion is behind the wars of the world. I have heard other members of my church say this with a measure of embarrassed confession.
Below I have video clips from two of the pre-eminent voices and researchers in religion today: Karen Armstrong and Robert Wright addressing this issue and why that maxim is erroneous (they argue that religion often exacerbates political conflict, entrenches is, but is rarely the cause. In fact modern day Islamic-terrorists groups were responding to political grievances, not religious ones, and the conflict has taken religious overtones, but has political solutions).
